The Ardennes Offensive largely took place on Belgian soil. On the map of the Twelfth Army Group from 27 December 1944, it is clearly visible how far west the German armored forces had advanced.
By 24 December, the vanguard of the 2nd Panzer Division had reached Foy-Notre-Dame, just a few kilometers from the Meuse River near Dinant. Two days later, on 26 December, General Patton’s 3rd U.S. Army relieved the besieged town of Bastogne from the south, marked on the map by the ‘mushroom’ in the front line.
